It is commonly observed that the iron doors of our house corrode after some time. This is due to the corrosion. Is corrosion a chemical property or a physical property to understand this it is necessary to know what is corrosion. The slow eating away of the metal surface due to the attack of moisture and gases like oxygen present in the atmosphere is known as corrosion. A red color layer develops on the surface of iron, when it get corrodes. Corrosion reduces life of the metal.
Corrosion is due to the reaction between iron, water, gases. The reaction in water, gases and metal tell us that “is corrosion a chemical property”.
Water vapors are present in the atmosphere are continuously in touch with the surface of the iron atom. These water vapors withdraw two electrons from the iron and accept them and converted in to the hydroxide ions, and iron gets convert in to the ferrous ions. The hydroxide ions react with ferrous ion to produce ferrous hydroxide. This ferrous oxide reacts with the atmospheric oxygen gas to produce ferric oxide.
This ferric oxide absorbs water vapors from the atmosphere and gives Fe2O3.XH20. This is known as rust and it deposits on the surface of iron.
Since the iron corrodes due to attack of gases. Therefore answer of our question is iron a chemical property or not is the yes, iron is a chemical property.
An experiment to find out is corrosion a chemical property that occurs due to the atmospheric gases.
Take 100- 100 ml of water in to two beakers. And iron needle was added to both. Supply the oxygen in the one beaker but maintain the vacuum in to second one. And keep them as it is for two to three weeks. You will observe that rust develops on the iron needle surface of the oxygen beaker but not on the iron needle surface of the vacuum beaker. Thus, iron needle of beaker one corrodes but not of the second one. This gives the answer of our question “is corrosion a chemical property that occurs due to atmospheric gases”.
